Most nights after work you can bet that I’m either running or climbing with some yoga mixed in there. I do my best to eat a balanced diet, but find it hard to get some good nutrients in me. When some supplements from NOW Foods landed on my doorstep, I was pretty stoked to start researching everything and adding it to my diet, accordingly.
Here’s a breakdown of the products I received, how I used them, and my thoughts.
With four grams of protein, this stuff definitely isn’t made for an post-activity drink. I love a good smoothie in the morning and started mixing the Sprouted Brown Rice Protein into my banana and strawberry smoothies. This practically acts as a quick meal for me and I sip on this stuff as I’m getting ready and then heading out the door to work. I’ve noticed that since adding the supplement, it holds off my hunger cravings a lot longer than just a regular morning smoothie. To get the best mix, I like to put the supplement at the bottom of the blender so a cloud of Sprouted Brown Rice Protein doesn’t poof into the air when I turn on the blender.
The MCT Oil was an interesting one for me to research. I read somewhere that it’s great to use in salad dressings (assuming you make your own) and even in your coffee. I started mixing 15 mL of MCT Oil into my coffee every morning and thought it was pretty good. I really liked how easy it was to blend into my coffee and that I was putting fats into my body that would be easily digested and burned later on in the day.
Probably my favorite supplement I received was the L-Carnitine Liquid. Typically supplements are known for bad taste, but the citrus flavor is absolutely delicious and it doesn’t have any sugars in it! Ever feel a little tired after work before your workout? Same here–I started using this supplement and felt a little burst of energy to get me going into my climb sesh or run. It really worked well with a quick meal bar and I didn’t feel any hunger cravings for a good four hours. This supplement was a great way for my to get into and through an activity without feeling like I had a bunch of food in my stomach weighing me down.
Coming back from a run or a hard climbing sesh would usually leave me feeling extremely famished. I started using this pea protein to get 25 grams of protein and that stopped those nagging hunger pains right away. My favorite way to use this supplement was after an early weekend morning run. I’d get back and put a glass of cold water in the blender, turn it on low and start adding a scoop of pea protein very slowly. Once all the protein powder was in the blender and well mixed, I’d add two packs on instant coffee. Such a great way to get some easy protein flowing through me in the morning with some coffee. Not to mention that the vanilla toffee flavor of the protein powder complimented the coffee perfectly.
Thanks to my buddy Dave at Low Gravity Ascents for introducing me to this tasty coffee beverage idea.
Ever feel like you’re doing a good job with your diet, but you could be getting a few more nutrients? I feel the same way sometimes, especially with my rather predictable diet. At first I thought multivitamins are only for guys that have just passed their prime, that’s what I see in the commercials. I decided to give it a go and I started feeling a boost of energy and alertness within a matter of days. I stopped taking the supplement and noticed my energy decrease and my performance at the climbing gym decrease as well. Started taking them again and again my energy levels rose. They’re an easy to swallow pill and I highly recommend taking them after you eat some good food, if you have a weak stomach like I do.
I was provided with product and compensation for this post, my thoughts expressed are and will always be my own.
